Body Aches Ain’t No Joke

I’m Coach Carl Fears, The Senior Trainer

Today we’re talking about something almost everybody understands at some point:

Body aches

Knees

Back

Shoulders

Hips

Stiffness when you first get up, that little ache that makes you say  “Where did that come from?” and here’s what I want people to understand as we get older, the body may change.

But that does not mean we stop using it.

In many cases, one of the worst things we can do is become afraid to move at all now, I’m not talking about ignoring serious pain.

I’m not talking about pushing through an injury.

If something is persistent, severe, or doesn’t feel right, get it checked out by the appropriate healthcare professional but when it comes to everyday stiffness and maintaining function, appropriate movement matters.

Sometimes people wake up a little stiff and decide “I’m not doing anything today.”

Then one day becomes two.

Two becomes a week.

And before you know it, you’re moving less and less that can become a cycle, your body was designed to move.

You don’t necessarily need an extreme workout.

You may need to walk.

Stretch.

Work on mobility.

Do some resistance training appropriate for your level.

Get some blood flowing.

And give your body an opportunity to warm up that’s something I understand personally. I’ve dealt with knee problems myself, and eventually I had both knees replaced. so I know what it’s like when movement doesn’t feel the way it used to. I also know that recovery and progress require patience. You have to learn the difference between discomfort from working and a warning that something may be wrong. That comes with experience, good coaching, and sometimes medical guidance.

Another thing people forget is recovery.

Training is important.

But so is what you do after you train.

Hydration matters.

Nutrition matters.

Sleep matters.

Recovery matters.

And consistency matters. You cannot beat your body up every day and call that healthy. The goal is to build a body that continues to serve you. Especially as you get older.

You want to be able to stand up.

Walk.

Climb stairs.

Carry groceries.

Play with your grandchildren.

Travel.

Work.

Live your life.

That is what strength is for, so when those body aches show up, don’t automatically decide that your active life is over.

Pay attention to what your body is telling you, make the adjustments you need, get appropriate help when you need it.

And keep doing what you safely can.

Because the goal isn’t to move like you did at 25.

The goal is to keep building the strongest, healthiest version of yourself right now.

So remember:

Move with purpose.

Train with wisdom.

Recover with intention.

And listen to your body.
